Understanding Controller for Electric Motor with Convert 2 EV

Chapter 3 of Convert 2 EV e-book by Les and Jane Oke covers the subject of the Electric Motor Controller. Why do we need a controller? Basically, the controller acts like the accelerator paddle for a gasoline driven car. We want to have the ability to control the speed of our electric vehicle. That is what the controller does. It controls the amount of voltage delivered to the electric motor.

In my Convert 2 EV review of Chapter 3, the author show you how to select the right controller for your electric car conversion project. There are 3 points suggested by the author. How you select a controller will depend on how you drive, the size of the electric motor and the size of your battery storage.

Want to know how fast your electric car can go? According to Convert 2 EV, it can go as fast as 60, 75 or even 100 mph. Most of the speed will boil down to the controller. If you are planning to start your own Do It Yourself (DIY) electric car conversion project, it is really important for you to understand the technical aspects of a controller. A small controller would not be able to deliver enough torque to the transmission. Too much torque and the electric motor will drain the battery quickly. Again, the key here it to find a balance.

When initiating an electric car retrofitting project, make sure you choose the right controller with Convert 2 EV manual.
